STONE

Stone’s heart ached. Though he no longer had an organic heart, it ached in his chest all the same. They’d hurt Yin so badly she’d sent them away. For as long as they’d dared, he and Steel had stood on the other side of the Blue’s door listening to her sob her heart out.

In the end, they’d left with their metaphorical tails between their legs.

As they wandered back around the building to the mustering yard, Steel argued their case.

“She’s totally over-reacting. No wonder we’re taken from females at an early age. They’re over-emotional and irrational. They weaken us. They’re only useful for one thing,” he ranted. “And because of the Blue, Yin won’t even meet that need. What use is she to us? None. None whatsoever.”

“We need to find out what happened with the Blue,” Stone said evenly, not allowing himself to be drawn into his partner’s angst-ridden diatribe.

“Why? It seems pretty obvious she only wants him. Do you want to have our noses rubbed in our inferiority?”

“Says the male who gave an obnoxious Green the opportunity to do just that,” Stone said evenly, although he noted his fists were clenched so tightly that his short nails dug into his flesh.

It would have drawn blood and hurt if he’d been in a human shell.

“That was a mistake. I won’t repeat it. This is different.”

“Yeah, it is. For better or worse, we’re in this with the Blue. We have been, ever since he took us aside and told us what our fate would be. And if Yin is supposed to be our fate, then we have to make it right with her. Which means understanding what’s going on in her head. The Blue was there. If anyone will have an idea, it’ll be him.”

Stone glared at Steel until he shrugged his reluctant agreement. Together they made their way to the Blue’s office, hopefully to catch him before he left for his shift at the temple.

Ever since he could remember, it had been Stone’s goal to earn the right to guard the priestesses, the most valuable members of their society. That the Blue they were now working with had reached that lofty position filled him with awe. But if that superior had hurt Yin in any way, he would find a way to make the male pay, no matter the cost to him personally.

At the office door he rapped loudly. A sharp order to enter came quickly.

They found Sand busily working at a computer. Stone was no stranger to the machines but had rarely had a reason to use one. Watching the Blue’s fingers fly over the keys was amazing.

“What?” snapped the Blue, without looking up from the screen.

“We need to talk about Yin,” Stone stated.

“Not here. I thought you’d remain with her until your shift started.”

“She got upset with us and told us to leave.”

That got the Blue’s attention. “What did you do?”

He felt Steel’s hackles rising next to him. To get in the way of the coming explosion he became proactive.
